Lufthansa Technik announces 30 layoffs

Lufthansa Technik Tulsa, the commercial aircraft component overhaul and repair company, has laid off 30 people, or 27 percent of its work force, half of them in the last month, company executives said Tuesday.

Bernd Riggers, president and CEO, said the recession’s effects on the commercial airline industry are being felt by customers and suppliers.

“It’s because of a reduction in the workload” that began last July and August, Riggers said. “At first, we tried to compensate for the lack of work coming in by receiving more work from Europe. But then, at the end of the year, they started to fear the recession in Europe as well.”

Compass Airlines Opens New Aircraft Maintenance Hangar

LOUISVILLE, KY — More new jobs are coming to Louisville. On Tuesday the Regional Airport Authority and Compass Airlines announced that the airline’s new $9.5 million aircraft maintenance hangar has been complete and is ready to open. The new hangar will open the doors for 70 new full-time jobs with an annual payroll of more than $3 million.

“I appreciate the commitment that Compass and Delta have made to the Louisville Regional Airport, to this region and to the state. And I’m glad we were able to work with them to bring this aircraft maintenance facility to fruition,” said Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear.

General Dynamics Aviation Services-West Palm Beach Earns FAA Award

SAVANNAH, GA – The General Dynamics Aviation Services center in West Palm Beach, FL, recently received the FAA 2008 AMT Diamond Certificate of Excellence award. It is the seventh consecutive year the facility has been honored with the distinction.

In addition, a record 44 General Dynamics Aviation Services-West Palm Beach employees earned the FAA’s Diamond Award for individuals. The facility had 42 Diamond Award winners in 2007. The AMT program was established in 1992 to recognize FAA-certified aviation mechanics and their employers for participating in supplemental aviation maintenance training and other continuing-education courses.

The Diamond Certificate is the highest of the FAA’s five award levels. Each level is based on the hours of qualifying aircraft maintenance training each member of the aviation maintenance workforce receives during the year. Examples of approved training include FAA and industry training seminars and on-the-job technical training or college-level courses in mathematics, science or management.

Mexican authorities suspends operations of AVIACSA

The Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT), through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has temporarily suspended operations of 25 aircraft of AVIACSA.
The measure is a result of recent inspections in which irregularities were detected which represent risks to aviation.
Aviacsa will have a period of 60 days, as of June 2, 2009, to correct the deficiencies identified. (Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes)
